How do you retwist locs?

Model: Mr. R

Stylist: Niina

Start with a clean & conditioned foundation.  Retwist the roots, palm roll, secure, repeat.

Q: what do you twist with?

A: Ross Essentiials TWST oil.
That's it. Product & locs do not mix, there is no way around this & if you know how to properly secure & twist roots you don't need it. This decreases dry time & keeps your client itchy-scalp free! #locs #naturalhair #retwist #rossessentiials #instavideo #followus

hair types & textures

the way your hair curls, coils or does whatever it wants, that's called something.

fine hair | Not to be confused with thin or thinning hair, fine hair textures tend to be light & often lifeless, holds oil, but typically doesn't hold a style.

medium hair | Typically fuller than fine hair or what we call thick-ish... easier to style than fine & thick hair. thick-ish hair gives the appearance of thickness, but does not necessarily have the mass you see when styled.

thick hair | Usually coarse, thick hair is known for a few things, being hard to dry, resistant to some chemicals & often times, just unruly. The upside is hair usually resists breakage, takes heat well & holds styles well.

4 - Kinky Curly

A - Fine, soft texture, tight S-Pattern curls that look coarse but are usually delicate.

B - Tight less defined Z-shaped pattern, usually harder to style/maintain, prone to frizz & breakage.

C - Delicate, thick, densely packed extremely tight coils. Hair is often packed to the scalp making it extremely difficult to dry. Prone to severe shrinkage, frizz & dryness.

3 - Curly Coils

A - Thick texture, highly defined large ringlets that are prone to frizz & dryness, but have lots of body & movement when styled.

B - Medium texture, medium size combinations of well defined, high volume curls & ringlets.

C - Thick & voluminous very tight curls/coils, usually easy to style, but prone to shrinkage.

2 - Wavy

A - Fine hair ranging from loose curls to S-shaped waves, no volume or definition, but easy to style.

B - Medium texture with straighter roots,

C - Thick waves from root to end, prone to frizz & known to be difficult to style.

1 - Straight

A - Very straight, often fine hair that typically doesn't hold curls.

B - Also very straight with medium thickness that can hold certain curls.

C - Thicker straight hair that is prone to frizz.

hair growth stages

We're born with all the hair follicles we will ever have & approximately 100,000 of those are on your scalp. Hair starts as a root made up of cells of protein, in the bottom of the follicle. Through circulation, blood vessels in your scalp feed the root, creating more cells. Once formed, the hair is pushed through the skin, passing an oil gland along the way which gives hair its luster & softness. This cycles happens is phases known as anagen, catagen, telogen & exogen.

ANAGEN is the active growth phase of hair follicles, which lasts 2-8 years. During this phase the root of the hair is dividing rapidly & adding to the hair shaft. Keratin & color pigment cells accumulating in your follicles while forming the root bulb & the hair shaft create a shadow on the scalp, making it easy to identify this phase of growth.

Next your hair enters the CATAGEN phase. For approximately 2-4 weeks, you will notice thin, soft hairs known as vellus hairs or more commonly “peach fuzz”. This is not permanent hair, but an early sign that the new strands are on their way. Catagen hair is soft & very fragile, so it is important to be gentle, consider limiting brushing & styling, especially while dry.

The final 2-4 months of the growth cycle is a two-part resting phase. The first part of the last stage is known as TELOGEN. This is when individual hairs are released & fall out, or “shed.” You will start to notice sturdy, coarse hairs that grow about ½-1½ inches a month. The follicle will then remain inactive for about 3 months before entering exogen.

During the EXOGEN phase, which lasts approximately 72 days, 88-100 strands are pushed from the scalp, daily making room for new strands.  When exogen ends, the cycle will begin again. You can speed the exogen phase up by washing & brushing your hair daily.

The Ross Essentiials™ formulas work in conjunction with hairs natural cycles to promote quick repair & healthy growth. We focus on infusing all-natural essentials into one bottle, minimizing the overall effort in keeping your natural hair healthy. loc care basics...

The keys to growth are no secret, getting them all into simple solution products, now that's the hard part. Niina Ross & Co. has done the research, formulated the products & now we want to key you in on what exactly it is we put in these little blue bottles of joy. Our handmade fermented rice water, hand whipped shea & homemade apple cider vinegar are the keys to the Essentiials™. In conjunction with a lot of patience & consistency, you can see a new head of hair in as little as six months. Get to know your hair, then get to know our products & let’s create magic.

Here's some important information to know before embarking on your loc journey.

Neglecting your locs comes with it's own problems, but too much maintenance also causes it's share of often irreversible damage. Over twisting the hair puts excessive stress on the roots, causing massive breakage & can ultimately lead to traction alopecia.

Locs are twisted in the same direction they start in. Each loctician has his/her method for twisting, repeatedly changing the direction of the twist will ultimately cause bubbles & then break off.

Tension from interlocking to the point of pulling the scalp can also lead to breakage, thinning & like every other issue, locs popping off. In the starter loc stage, your loctician instructs you to twist daily & maintenance them every 1-2 weeks. However, once your hair locs you need 2-3 weeks between maintenance appointments, this allows the freshly twisted hair time to loc. Once your locs are fully budded, maintenance once a month is sufficient. Just as with any other process, you have to find a balance - YOUR balance. Your hair isn't the same as anyone else's, so your routine, products, maintenance & treatment schedule won't be. Find your loctician & trust the process!

Your hair should be washed & twisted/tightened at least once a month, some hair textures manage to go 6-8 weeks between maintenance. When our schedules get busy, most of us will skip out on our self-care routine to make sure things get done.

As your hair grows & sheds, the loose hairs from your gather inside the loc adding to its strength. Not twisting your hair regularly causes that hair to fall out & grow away from the locs, which is the leading cause of thinning at the base of the loc. This causes the base of the loc to thin out, which leads to locs popping off. On the same token, skipping retwists also cause bubbles in your locs. Bubbles come from new growth that was not twisted or was twisted in the wrong direction.

This is why it's important to stick with one loctician.
